History: Unit K9 WW2. The centre was originally the Operations Headquarters for the USAAF 8th Fighter Command during WW2.

Our hands-on activities,artefacts collection,and living history activities enable teachers to cover almost ALL aspects of this History Unit in ONE visit. Activities cover the Home Front, Children at War, Women at War, and Animals in Wartime.

Environment

Map and Compass Work Using a map and compass to follow a route. Using grid references and an Ordnance Survey map. Developing the concept of a "mental map". Working together as a team.
Freshwater Life Sampling, identifying and drawing freshwater animals. Developing an understanding of food chains and food webs and considering the effects of pollution.
Streams and Rivers Studying the water cycle at different stages. Considering how a river changes from source to mouth. Measuring width, depth, velocity and discharge.
Woods and Trees Exploring the concept of an ecosystem. Measuring and calculating tree dimensions. Considering the impact of people on woodlands. Investigating the effects of light on plants.
Soils Sampling soil to examine texture, type and layers. Investigating life in the soil. Considering the importance of soil.
Weather Recording meteorological data. Displaying the data in graphs and tables.
Minibeasts Appreciating the variety of animals without backbones. Examining animal adaptation to their habitat. Considering how important soil animals are in recycling nutrients.
Mammals I dentifying smaller mammals. Examining tracks, trails and signs. Investigating their variety and distribution. Designing an experiment to compare day and night time activity.
People and Communities Investigating how people use the local environment. Studying the impact of human use. Considering past and present farming practices. Measuring impact through trampling and litter surveys. Investigating freshwater pollution.
Nightwalks Experiencing the sounds, smell and "feel" of night. Practising the use of all the senses. Using creative writing, sketching and drawing to review the experience.
